The demon lord Vepacitti proposes to Sakka that they engage in a battle of wits in debate rather than war. Vepacitti speaks in praise of forceful punishment, while Sakka stands up for patience and forgiveness.

“Once upon a time, mendicants, a battle was fought between the gods and the titans.

“Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, devāsurasaṅgāmo samupabyūḷho ahosi.

Then Vepacitti, lord of titans, said to Sakka, lord of gods,

Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa 1.2.5.1). This battle by debate recalls Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.3.1, which explains that the titans are the elder children of Pajāpati. The younger children, the gods, sought to overcome them by means of reciting the sacred word (udgītha), but the titans pierced it with the evil that is bad speech. Recite a verse.’

‘Bhiyyo bālā pabhijjeyyuṁ, no cassa paṭisedhako; Tasmā bhusena daṇḍena, dhīro bālaṁ nisedhaye’ti.

I see a flaw.
vajjaṁ passāmi vāsava;
When a fool thinks,
Yadā naṁ maññati bālo,
“He endures me out of fear,”
bhayā myāyaṁ titikkhati;

‘Kāmaṁ maññatu vā mā vā, bhayā myāyaṁ titikkhati; Sadatthaparamā atthā, khantyā bhiyyo na vijjati.

For the highest goal, one’s own,

When a strong person endures a weakling, they call that the ultimate patience, for a weakling must always be patient.

The strength of folly is really just weakness, they say. But no-one can challenge a person who’s strong, guarded by the teaching.

Abalaṁ taṁ balaṁ āhu, yassa bālabalaṁ balaṁ; Balassa dhammaguttassa, paṭivattā na vijjati.

is really just weakness, they say.

When you get angry at an angry person you just make things worse for yourself. When you don’t get angry at an angry person you win a battle hard to win.

Tasseva tena pāpiyo, yo kuddhaṁ paṭikujjhati; Kuddhaṁ appaṭikujjhanto, saṅgāmaṁ jeti dujjayaṁ.

When you get angry at an angry person

Bhāsitā kho sakkena devānamindena gāthāyo.*Bhāsitā kho → bhāsitā kho pana (bj, pts2ed) Tā ca kho adaṇḍāvacarā asatthāvacarā, iti abhaṇḍanaṁ iti aviggaho iti akalaho.
