Sakka reflects that one should not harm even one’s enemy. Knowing this, Vepacitti immediately takes advantage of it.

“Once upon a time, mendicants, as Sakka, lord of gods, was in private retreat this thought came to his mind, ‘I should never betray even a sworn enemy.’

“Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, sakkassa devānamindassa rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ‘yopi me assa supaccatthiko tassapāhaṁ na dubbheyyan’ti.

“Once upon a time, mendicants, as Sakka, lord of gods, was in private retreat this thought came to his mind,

And then Vepacitti, lord of titans, knowing Sakka’s train of thought, approached him.*It seems that even when on retreat, Sakka was thinking of Vepacitti, and Vepacitti was thinking of Sakka.

Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkassa devānamindassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya yena sakko devānamindo tenupasaṅkami.

And then Vepacitti, lord of titans, knowing Sakka’s train of thought, approached him.*It seems that even when on retreat, Sakka was thinking of Vepacitti, and Vepacitti was thinking of Sakka.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkassa devānamindassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya yena sakko devānamindo tenupasaṅkami.

Sakka saw Vepacitti coming off in the distance, and said to him, ‘Stop, Vepacitti, you’re caught!’

Addasā kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Disvāna vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ etadavoca: ‘tiṭṭha, vepacitti, gahitosī’ti.

Sakka saw Vepacitti coming off in the distance,
Addasā kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ.
and said to him,
Disvāna vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ etadavoca:
‘Stop, Vepacitti, you’re caught!’
‘tiṭṭha, vepacitti, gahitosī’ti.

‘Yadeva te, mārisa, pubbe cittaṁ, tadeva tvaṁ mā pajahāsī’ti.*tadeva tvaṁ mā pajahāsī’ti → tadeva tvaṁ mārisa pahāsīti (bj); tadeva tvaṁ mārisa jahāsīti (sya-all, km); tad eva tvam mā pahāsīti (pts1ed)

‘Good fellow, don’t give up the idea you just had!’

‘Swear, Vepacitti, that you won’t betray me.’

‘Sapassu ca me, vepacitti, adubbhāyā’ti.*adubbhāyā’ti → adrubbhāya (mr)

‘Sapassu ca me, vepacitti, adubbhāyā’ti.*adubbhāyā’ti → adrubbhāya (mr)

‘Swear, Vepacitti, that you won’t betray me.’ ‘Sapassu ca me, vepacitti, adubbhāyā’ti.*adubbhāyā’ti → adrubbhāya (mr)

‘Whatever bad things happen to a liar,*Despite their differences, both sides in a dispute respect morality and each other. or to someone who slanders the noble ones, or to someone who betrays a friend, or to someone who’s ungrateful, the same bad things impact anyone who betrays you, Sujā’s husband.’”*Vepacitti is reminding Sakka of their family connection. His wife is the Asura maiden Sujā (SN 11.12:6.1), hence the titans are his brothers (DN 20:12.3).

‘Yaṁ musā bhaṇato pāpaṁ, Yaṁ pāpaṁ ariyūpavādino; Mittadduno ca yaṁ pāpaṁ, Yaṁ pāpaṁ akataññuno; Tameva pāpaṁ phusatu,*phusatu → phusati (bj, pts1ed, pts2ed) Yo te dubbhe sujampatī’”ti.

‘Whatever bad things happen to a liar,*Despite their differences, both sides in a dispute respect morality and each other.
