The Buddha points out that each of the great disciples has a retinue of students of a similar character. And the monks in Devadatta’s retinue all have evil wishes.
Ver en el glosario was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain.*The seven good monks here are among the Buddha’s greatest disciples, all of whom were regarded as possessing great qualities of character and spiritual prowess. They each had their own speciality, which attracted students of a similar character. Now at that time Venerable Sāriputta was walking together with several mendicants not far from the Buddha. Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was doing likewise, as were Venerable Mahākassapa, Venerable Anuruddha, Venerable Puṇṇa son of Mantāṇī, Venerable Upāli, Venerable Ānanda, and DevadattaDevadattaUn primo del Buddha que intentó provocar un cisma en el saṅgha y que desde entonces se ha convertido en emblema de todos los budistas que trabajan, consciente o inconscientemente, para socavar la religión desde dentro.Ver en el glosario.

“All of those mendicants are very learned. Do you see Devadatta walking together with several mendicants?”*Devadatta was the Buddha’s cousin and nemesis. After going forth together with several other relatives of the Buddha (Kd 17:1.4.1), his initial success in meditation was corrupted by his desire for gains and fame (SN 17.35). He tried to take over the Saṅgha but was denounced by the Buddha. His attempt to create a schismatic faction failed and he died in disgrace.
