Downfalls for a Lay Follower

A lay follower misses out on seeingthose who are evolvedand listening to the teachings of the Noble One.They don’t train in higher ethical conduct,

Dassanaṁ bhāvitattānaṁ, Yo hāpeti upāsako; Savanañca ariyadhammānaṁ, Adhisīle na sikkhati.

A lay follower misses out on seeingDassanaṁ bhāvitattānaṁ, those who are evolvedYo hāpeti upāsako; and listening to the teachings of the Noble One.Savanañca ariyadhammānaṁ, They don’t train in higher ethical conduct,Adhisīle na sikkhati.

and their suspicion about mendicantsjust grows and grows.They want to listen to the true teachingwith a fault-finding mind.

Appasādo ca bhikkhūsu, bhiyyo bhiyyo pavaḍḍhati; Upārambhakacitto ca, saddhammaṁ sotumicchati.

and their suspicion about mendicantsAppasādo ca bhikkhūsu, just grows and grows.bhiyyo bhiyyo pavaḍḍhati; They want to listen to the true teachingUpārambhakacitto ca, with a fault-finding mind.saddhammaṁ sotumicchati.

They seek outside the Buddhist communityfor someone else worthy of religious donations,and that lay followerserves them first.

Ito ca bahiddhā aññaṁ, dakkhiṇeyyaṁ gavesati; Tattheva ca pubbakāraṁ, yo karoti upāsako.

They seek outside the Buddhist communityIto ca bahiddhā aññaṁ, for someone else worthy of religious donations,dakkhiṇeyyaṁ gavesati; and that lay followerTattheva ca pubbakāraṁ, serves them first.yo karoti upāsako.
