“I beseech you, the bastion-leaver, the craving-cutter, the imperturbable,”said Venerable Bhadrāvudha,“the delight-leaver, the flood-crosser, the freed,the formulation-leaver, the intelligent.Different people have gathered <j>from across the nations

“Okañjahaṁ taṇhacchidaṁ anejaṁ, (iccāyasmā bhadrāvudho) Nandiñjahaṁ oghatiṇṇaṁ vimuttaṁ; Kappañjahaṁ abhiyāce sumedhaṁ, Sutvāna nāgassa apanamissanti ito.

“I beseech you, the bastion-leaver, the craving-cutter, the imperturbable,”
“Okañjahaṁ taṇhacchidaṁ anejaṁ,
said Venerable Bhadrāvudha,
(iccāyasmā bhadrāvudho)
“the delight-leaver, the flood-crosser, the freed,

the formulation-leaver, the intelligent.
Kappañjahaṁ abhiyāce sumedhaṁ,

Nānājanā janapadehi saṅgatā, Tava vīra vākyaṁ abhikaṅkhamānā; Tesaṁ tuvaṁ sādhu viyākarohi, Tathā hi te vidito esa dhammo”.

wishing to hear your word, O hero.
Nānājanā janapadehi saṅgatā,
After hearing the spiritual giant <j>they will depart from here.
Tava vīra vākyaṁ abhikaṅkhamānā;
Please, sage, answer them clearly,
Tesaṁ tuvaṁ sādhu viyākarohi,
for truly you understand this matter.”
Tathā hi te vidito esa dhammo”.

So let a mindful mendicant who understandsnot grasp anything in all the world,observing that, in clinging to attachments,*Read (with Niddesa) as accusative plural. Norman reads ādānasatte as locative singular, but compare the similar construction at Thag 19.1:20.3, where the former part of the line is accusative.these people cling to the domain of death.”

Tasmā pajānaṁ na upādiyetha, Bhikkhu sato kiñcanaṁ sabbaloke; Ādānasatte iti pekkhamāno, Pajaṁ imaṁ maccudheyye visattan”ti.

So let a mindful mendicant who understands

not grasp anything in all the world,
Bhikkhu sato kiñcanaṁ sabbaloke;
