The Buffalo King’s Conduct

“Then again when I wasa buffalo who roamed the forest,large in body and strong,big and scary to see.

“Punāparaṁ yadā homi, mahiṁso pavanacārako; *mahiṁso → mahiso (bj, sya1ed, sya2ed, pts-vp-pli1)Pavaḍḍhakāyo balavā, mahanto bhīmadassano.

In a cave, a craggy hillside,at a tree root or a waterhole,there’d be somewhere for buffalos,in one place or another.

Pabbhāre giridugge ca, *giridugge → vanadugge (bj)rukkhamūle dakāsaye; Hotettha ṭhānaṁ mahiṁsānaṁ, koci koci tahiṁ tahiṁ.

Vicaranto brahāraññe, ṭhānaṁ addasa bhaddakaṁ; Taṁ ṭhānaṁ upagantvāna, tiṭṭhāmi ca sayāmi ca.

Then a monkey came along,wicked, ignoble, and nimble.On my shoulder, forehead, and eyebrows,he peed and pooed.

Athettha kapimāgantvā, pāpo anariyo lahu; Khandhe nalāṭe bhamuke, mutteti ohadeti taṁ. *ohadeti → ohaneti (pts-vp-pli1-2, csp1ed)

Not just that day, but a second,a third, and a fourth;he soiled me all the time,he was harrying me.

Sakimpi divasaṁ dutiyaṁ, tatiyaṁ catutthampi ca; Dūseti maṁ sabbakālaṁ, tena homi upadduto.

Not just that day, but a second,Sakimpi divasaṁ dutiyaṁ, a third, and a fourth;tatiyaṁ catutthampi ca; he soiled me all the time,Dūseti maṁ sabbakālaṁ, he was harrying me.tena homi upadduto.

Seeing me being harried,a spirit said to me:‘Kill that vile, wicked thingwith your horns and hooves.’

Mamaṁ upaddutaṁ disvā, yakkho maṁ idamabravi; ‘Nāsehetaṁ chavaṁ pāpaṁ, siṅgehi ca khurehi ca’.

Seeing me being harried,Mamaṁ upaddutaṁ disvā, a spirit said to me:yakkho maṁ idamabravi; ‘Kill that vile, wicked thing‘Nāsehetaṁ chavaṁ pāpaṁ, with your horns and hooves.’siṅgehi ca khurehi ca’.

When he spoke, I saidthis to that spirit:‘Why would you smear mewith a wicked, ignoble carcass?

Evaṁ vutte, tadā yakkhe, ahaṁ taṁ idamabraviṁ; ‘Kiṁ tvaṁ makkhesi kuṇapena, pāpena anariyena maṁ.

When he spoke, I saidEvaṁ vutte, tadā yakkhe, this to that spirit:ahaṁ taṁ idamabraviṁ; ‘Why would you smear me‘Kiṁ tvaṁ makkhesi kuṇapena, with a wicked, ignoble carcass?pāpena anariyena maṁ.

If I were upset with himI would degrade myself,violating my ethics,and being criticized by sensible people.

Yadihaṁ tassa pakuppeyyaṁ, tato hīnataro bhave; Sīlañca me pabhijjeyya, viññū ca garaheyyu maṁ.

If I were upset with himYadihaṁ tassa pakuppeyyaṁ, I would degrade myself,tato hīnataro bhave; violating my ethics,Sīlañca me pabhijjeyya, and being criticized by sensible people.viññū ca garaheyyu maṁ.

Better to die from puritythan live in shame.How could I, for the sake of life,harm another?’

Hīḷitā jīvitā vāpi, parisuddhena mataṁ varaṁ; Kyāhaṁ jīvitahetūpi, kāhāmi paraheṭhanaṁ’.

Better to die from purityHīḷitā jīvitā vāpi, than live in shame.parisuddhena mataṁ varaṁ; How could I, for the sake of life,Kyāhaṁ jīvitahetūpi, harm another?’kāhāmi paraheṭhanaṁ’.

Thinking of me, this onewill do the same to others,and for that they will kill him.Then I shall be free.

Mamevāyaṁ maññamāno, aññepevaṁ karissati; Teva tassa vadhissanti, sā me mutti bhavissati.

Thinking of me, this oneMamevāyaṁ maññamāno, will do the same to others,aññepevaṁ karissati; and for that they will kill him.Teva tassa vadhissanti, Then I shall be free.sā me mutti bhavissati.

Forgiving disrespectfrom the low, middle and high,the wise one gainstheir heart’s desire.”

Hīnamajjhimaukkaṭṭhe, sahanto avamānitaṁ; Evaṁ labhati sappañño, manasā yathāpatthitan”ti.
