Yudhañjaya’s Conduct

“When I was Prince Yudhañjayaof infinite fame,I was stirred with urgency on seeinga fallen dewdrop in the heat of the sun.

“Yadāhaṁ amitayaso, Rājaputto yudhañjayo; Ussāvabinduṁ sūriyātape, Patitaṁ disvāna saṁvijiṁ.

“When I was Prince Yudhañjaya“Yadāhaṁ amitayaso, of infinite fame,Rājaputto yudhañjayo; I was stirred with urgency on seeingUssāvabinduṁ sūriyātape, a fallen dewdrop in the heat of the sun.Patitaṁ disvāna saṁvijiṁ.

Taking that to be of prime importance,I fostered that urgency.I bowed to my mother and father,and begged permission to go forth.

Taññevādhipatiṁ katvā, saṁvegamanubrūhayiṁ; Mātāpitū ca vanditvā, pabbajjamanuyācahaṁ.

Taking that to be of prime importance,Taññevādhipatiṁ katvā, I fostered that urgency.saṁvegamanubrūhayiṁ; I bowed to my mother and father,Mātāpitū ca vanditvā, and begged permission to go forth.pabbajjamanuyācahaṁ.

With cupped palms,along with the citizens of town and country, they asked,‘This very day, rule this great land,so successful and prosperous.’

Yācanti maṁ pañjalikā, sanegamā saraṭṭhakā; ‘Ajjeva putta paṭipajja, iddhaṁ phītaṁ mahāmahiṁ’.

With cupped palms,Yācanti maṁ pañjalikā, along with the citizens of town and country, they asked,sanegamā saraṭṭhakā; ‘This very day, rule this great land,‘Ajjeva putta paṭipajja, so successful and prosperous.’iddhaṁ phītaṁ mahāmahiṁ’.

The King and the Queens,with the citizens of town and country,cried pitifully,as I forsook unconcerned.

Sarājake sahorodhe, sanegame saraṭṭhake; Karuṇaṁ paridevante, anapekkhova pariccajiṁ.

Kingship over the entire earth,family, retinue, and fame—I gave them up without a second thought,because it was solely for awakening.

Kevalaṁ pathaviṁ rajjaṁ, ñātiparijanaṁ yasaṁ; Cajamāno na cintesiṁ, bodhiyāyeva kāraṇā.

Mātāpitā na me dessā, napi me dessaṁ mahāyasaṁ; Sabbaññutaṁ piyaṁ mayhaṁ, tasmā rajjaṁ pariccajin”ti.
