Sutasoma’s Conduct

“Then again when I wasSutasoma, Lord of the Earth,captured by a cannibalI remembered my promise to a brahmin.

“Punāparaṁ yadā homi, sutasomo mahīpati; Gahito porisādena, brāhmaṇe saṅgaraṁ sariṁ.

“Then again when I was“Punāparaṁ yadā homi, Sutasoma, Lord of the Earth,sutasomo mahīpati; captured by a cannibalGahito porisādena, I remembered my promise to a brahmin.brāhmaṇe saṅgaraṁ sariṁ.

A hundred aristocrat warriorshe strung up by their hands .Having drained their blood,he brought me for sacrifice.

Khattiyānaṁ ekasataṁ, āvuṇitvā karattale; Etesaṁ pamilāpetvā, yaññatthe upanayī mamaṁ.

A hundred aristocrat warriorsKhattiyānaṁ ekasataṁ, he strung up by their hands .āvuṇitvā karattale; Having drained their blood,Etesaṁ pamilāpetvā, he brought me for sacrifice.yaññatthe upanayī mamaṁ.

The cannibal asked me,‘What do you wish for—release?I shall act as you think,so long as you will return.’

Apucchi maṁ porisādo, ‘kiṁ tvaṁ icchasi nissajaṁ; Yathāmati te kāhāmi, yadi me tvaṁ punehisi’.

The cannibal asked me,Apucchi maṁ porisādo, ‘What do you wish for—release?‘kiṁ tvaṁ icchasi nissajaṁ; I shall act as you think,Yathāmati te kāhāmi, so long as you will return.’yadi me tvaṁ punehisi’.

I promised him that Iwould return at dawn.I went to the delightful cityand then renounced kingship.

Tassa paṭissuṇitvāna, paṇhe āgamanaṁ mama; Upagantvā puraṁ rammaṁ, rajjaṁ niyyādayiṁ tadā.

I promised him that ITassa paṭissuṇitvāna, would return at dawn.paṇhe āgamanaṁ mama; I went to the delightful cityUpagantvā puraṁ rammaṁ, and then renounced kingship.rajjaṁ niyyādayiṁ tadā.

Recollecting the true DhammaDhamma1. Fenómeno; cualquier cosa que ocurre y es cognoscible. 2. Fenómeno mental, «pensamiento». 3. Principio, especialmente los principios de causalidad. 4. Recollecting the true Dhamma,Anussaritvā sataṁ dhammaṁ, fostered by former Victors,pubbakaṁ jinasevitaṁ; I gave money to the brahmin,Brāhmaṇassa dhanaṁ datvā, and returned to the cannibal.porisādaṁ upāgamiṁ.

I had no doubtthat he was going to kill me.Protecting my truthful speech,I went to give up my life.There is no-one to equal my truthfulness:this is my perfection of truth.”

Natthi me saṁsayo tattha, Ghātayissati vā na vā; Saccavācānurakkhanto, Jīvitaṁ cajitumupāgamiṁ; Saccena me samo natthi, Esā me saccapāramī”ti.

I had no doubtNatthi me saṁsayo tattha, that he was going to kill me.Ghātayissati vā na vā; Protecting my truthful speech,Saccavācānurakkhanto, I went to give up my life.Jīvitaṁ cajitumupāgamiṁ; There is no-one to equal my truthfulness:Saccena me samo natthi, this is my perfection of truth.”Esā me saccapāramī”ti.
