When people are asked whether they are enlightened, they might answer for different reasons.

“Mendicants, there are five ways of declaring enlightenment.What five?One declares enlightenment out of stupidity and folly.Or because of corrupt wishes, being of wishful temperament.Or because of madness and mental disorder.Or out of overestimation.Or one declares enlightenment rightly.These are the five ways of declaring enlightenment.”

“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, aññābyākaraṇāni. Katamāni pañca? Mandattā momūhattā aññaṁ byākaroti; pāpiccho icchāpakato aññaṁ byākaroti; ummādā cittakkhepā aññaṁ byākaroti; adhimānena aññaṁ byākaroti; sammadeva aññaṁ byākaroti. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca aññābyākaraṇānī”ti.

“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, aññābyākaraṇāni.

What five?

Katamāni pañca?

One declares enlightenment out of stupidity and folly.

Mandattā momūhattā aññaṁ byākaroti;

Or because of corrupt wishes, being of wishful temperament.

pāpiccho icchāpakato aññaṁ byākaroti;

Or because of madness and mental disorder.

ummādā cittakkhepā aññaṁ byākaroti;

Or one declares enlightenment rightly.

sammadeva aññaṁ byākaroti.

These are the five ways of declaring enlightenment.”
