I was ethical, full of good qualities,
Sīlavā guṇasampanno,
of fine and eloquent speech,
kalyāṇapaṭibhānavā;
honoring elders, conscientious,
Vuḍḍhāpacāyī hirīmā,
and expert in the methods of inclusiveness.

Now there was this charlatan renunciant*According to Ja 505 commentary, he overheard proper ascetics predicting the birth of a prince. He curried favor with the king by lying that he predicted this.who was favored by the king.He made a living by cultivatingan orchard and flowering shrubs.

Tassa rañño patikaro, ahosi kuhakatāpaso; Ārāmaṁ mālāvacchañca, ropayitvāna jīvati.

Tassa rañño patikaro,

Natthimassa sataṁ dhammo, sāmaññāpagato ayaṁ; Hirīsukkadhammajahito, jīvitavuttikāraṇā.

‘There is no good in him,
Natthimassa sataṁ dhammo,
he has strayed from asceticism.
sāmaññāpagato ayaṁ;
He has left the bright qualities of conscience
Hirīsukkadhammajahito,
for the sake of making a living.’

Then the borders were in turmoilby wild frontier savages.Before going to put an end to it,my father instructed me:

Kupito ahu paccanto, *ahu → ahosi (bj, pts-vp-pli1-2); āsi (sya1ed, sya2ed)aṭavīhi parantihi; Taṁ nisedhetuṁ gacchanto, anusāsi pitā mamaṁ.

Then the borders were in turmoil

I went then to serve him,and said the following.‘I hope you are well, householder.Is there anything I can bring for you?’

Tamahaṁ gantvānupaṭṭhānaṁ, Idaṁ vacanamabraviṁ; ‘Kacci te gahapati kusalaṁ, Kiṁ vā te āharīyatu’.

I went then to serve him,
Tamahaṁ gantvānupaṭṭhānaṁ,
and said the following.
Idaṁ vacanamabraviṁ;
‘I hope you are well, householder.
‘Kacci te gahapati kusalaṁ,
Is there anything I can bring for you?’
Kiṁ vā te āharīyatu’.

I went then to serve him,Tamahaṁ gantvānupaṭṭhānaṁ, and said the following.Idaṁ vacanamabraviṁ; ‘I hope you are well, householder.‘Kacci te gahapati kusalaṁ, Is there anything I can bring for you?’Kiṁ vā te āharīyatu’.

At that he was upset with me,that prideful charlatan.‘I’ll have you killed right now!Or banished from the realm!’

Tena so kupito āsi, kuhako mānanissito; ‘Ghātāpemi tuvaṁ ajja, raṭṭhā pabbājayāmi vā’.

‘I’ll have you killed right now!

After putting an end to the border conflict,the king said to the charlatan,‘I hope you’re keeping well, sir,and honors were served you?’

Nisedhayitvā paccantaṁ, rājā kuhakamabravi; ‘Kacci te bhante khamanīyaṁ, sammāno te pavattito’.

‘I hope you’re keeping well, sir,

Tassa ācikkhatī pāpo, kumāro yathā nāsiyo; Tassa taṁ vacanaṁ sutvā, āṇāpesi mahīpati.

That wicked one told him
Tassa ācikkhatī pāpo,
how the prince deserved execution.
kumāro yathā nāsiyo;
When he heard these words,
Tassa taṁ vacanaṁ sutvā,
the Lord of the Earth commanded:
āṇāpesi mahīpati.

‘Cut off his head right there!
‘Sīsaṁ tattheva chinditvā,
Saw his corpse into four pieces!
katvāna catukhaṇḍikaṁ;
And then show them from street to street:
Rathiyā rathiyaṁ dassetha,
this is the fate of one who shames the ascetic.’
sā gati jaṭilahīḷitā’.

‘Cut off his head right there!‘Sīsaṁ tattheva chinditvā, Saw his corpse into four pieces!katvāna catukhaṇḍikaṁ; And then show them from street to street:Rathiyā rathiyaṁ dassetha, this is the fate of one who shames the ascetic.’sā gati jaṭilahīḷitā’.

Right away left the punishers—fierce, violent and pitiless.They dragged me from my mother’s lapand led me away.

Tattha kāraṇikā gantvā, caṇḍā luddā akāruṇā; Mātu aṅke nisinnassa, ākaḍḍhitvā nayanti maṁ.

Tesāhaṁ evamavacaṁ, bandhataṁ gāḷhabandhanaṁ; ‘Rañño dassetha maṁ khippaṁ, rājakiriyāni atthi me’.

I said to them
Tesāhaṁ evamavacaṁ,
as they bound me with tight bonds:
bandhataṁ gāḷhabandhanaṁ;
‘Present me to the king right now,
‘Rañño dassetha maṁ khippaṁ,
I have an issue for the king!’
rājakiriyāni atthi me’.

follower of the wicked one and his wicked ways.

On seeing me, I persuaded him

and brought him under my influence.
