Kururāja’s Conduct

“Then again when I reignedin Indapatta, the capital city,*Indrapastha, modern Delhi.as the king named DhanañjayaI was blessed with the ten skillful deeds.

“Punāparaṁ yadā homi, indapatthe puruttame; *indapatthe → indapatte (bj, pts-vp-pli2, mr); indapaṭṭhe (pts-vp-pli1)Rājā dhanañcayo nāma, kusale dasahupāgato.

From the realm of Kaliṅgabrahmins came to merequesting the royal elephantthat was lucky and deemed auspicious.

Kaliṅgaraṭṭhavisayā, brāhmaṇā upagañchu maṁ; Āyācuṁ maṁ hatthināgaṁ, dhaññaṁ maṅgalasammataṁ.

From the realm of KaliṅgaKaliṅgaraṭṭhavisayā, brahmins came to mebrāhmaṇā upagañchu maṁ; requesting the royal elephantĀyācuṁ maṁ hatthināgaṁ, that was lucky and deemed auspicious.dhaññaṁ maṅgalasammataṁ.

‘Our nation is suffering from drought,food is scarce and famine abounds,please give the noble elephantof midnight hue named Añjana.’

‘Avuṭṭhiko janapado, dubbhikkho chātako mahā; Dadāhi pavaraṁ nāgaṁ, nīlaṁ añjanasavhayaṁ’.

‘Our nation is suffering from drought,‘Avuṭṭhiko janapado, food is scarce and famine abounds,dubbhikkho chātako mahā; please give the noble elephantDadāhi pavaraṁ nāgaṁ, of midnight hue named Añjana.’nīlaṁ añjanasavhayaṁ’.

‘When supplicants come to meit is unbefitting to refuse.Let not my vow be broken,I shall give the mighty elephant.’

‘Na me yācakamanuppatte, paṭikkhepo anucchavo; Mā me bhijji samādānaṁ, dassāmi vipulaṁ gajaṁ’.

‘When supplicants come to me‘Na me yācakamanuppatte, it is unbefitting to refuse.paṭikkhepo anucchavo; Let not my vow be broken,Mā me bhijji samādānaṁ, I shall give the mighty elephant.’dassāmi vipulaṁ gajaṁ’.

Taking the elephant by the trunk,and a bejeweled ceremonial vessel,I sprinkled water on the hand,and gave the elephant to the brahmins.

Nāgaṁ gahetvā soṇḍāya, bhiṅgāre ratanāmaye; *bhiṅgāre → bhiṅkāre (bj, pts-vp-pli1-2)Jalaṁ hatthe ākiritvā, brāhmaṇānaṁ adaṁ gajaṁ.

Taking the elephant by the trunk,Nāgaṁ gahetvā soṇḍāya, and a bejeweled ceremonial vessel,bhiṅgāre ratanāmaye; *bhiṅgāre → bhiṅkāre (bj, pts-vp-pli1-2)I sprinkled water on the hand,Jalaṁ hatthe ākiritvā, and gave the elephant to the brahmins.brāhmaṇānaṁ adaṁ gajaṁ.

When I had given the elephant,my ministers said,‘Why did you give the noble elephantto the supplicants?

Tassa nāge padinnamhi, amaccā etadabravuṁ; ‘Kiṁ nu tuyhaṁ varaṁ nāgaṁ, yācakānaṁ padassasi.

When I had given the elephant,Tassa nāge padinnamhi, my ministers said,amaccā etadabravuṁ; ‘Why did you give the noble elephant‘Kiṁ nu tuyhaṁ varaṁ nāgaṁ, to the supplicants?yācakānaṁ padassasi.

He was lucky and endowed with the auspicious,supreme victor in battle.Now you have given the elephant,how shall you govern the realm?’

Dhaññaṁ maṅgalasampannaṁ, saṅgāmavijayuttamaṁ; Tasmiṁ nāge padinnamhi, kiṁ te rajjaṁ karissati’.

He was lucky and endowed with the auspicious,Dhaññaṁ maṅgalasampannaṁ, supreme victor in battle.saṅgāmavijayuttamaṁ; Now you have given the elephant,Tasmiṁ nāge padinnamhi, how shall you govern the realm?’kiṁ te rajjaṁ karissati’.

‘I would give the entire realmand my physical body as well.Omniscience is precious to me,which is why I gave away the elephant.’”

‘Rajjampi me dade sabbaṁ, sarīraṁ dajjamattano; Sabbaññutaṁ piyaṁ mayhaṁ, tasmā nāgaṁ adāsahan’”ti.

‘I would give the entire realm‘Rajjampi me dade sabbaṁ, and my physical body as well.sarīraṁ dajjamattano; Omniscience is precious to me,Sabbaññutaṁ piyaṁ mayhaṁ, which is why I gave away the elephant.’”tasmā nāgaṁ adāsahan’”ti.
