Then a mendicant went up to the BuddhaBuddhaEl nombre dado a quien redescubre por sí mismo el sendero liberador del Dhamma, tras un largo período de haber sido olvidado por el mundo. “Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘knowledge’. What is knowledge? And how is a knowing one defined?”

“‘vijjā, vijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati. Katamā nu kho, bhante, vijjā; kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti?

“Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘knowledge’.
“‘vijjā, vijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati.
What is knowledge?
Katamā nu kho, bhante, vijjā;
And how is a knowing one defined?”
kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti?

“Knowing about suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering. This is called knowledge. And this is how a knowing one is defined.

“Yaṁ kho, bhikkhu, dukkhe ñāṇaṁ, dukkhasamudaye ñāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhe ñāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya ñāṇaṁ—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, vijjā; ettāvatā ca vijjāgato hotīti.
