The characteristics of the ideal sage, who finds happiness and security in living the solitary life. (This sutta is apparently one of the series of passages that King Asoka recommended for study and reflection by all practicing Buddhists.)
Peril stems from intimacy, dust comes from an abode. Freedom from abode and intimacy: that is the sage’s vision.

Yo jātamucchijja na ropayeyya, Jāyantamassa nānuppavecche; Tamāhu ekaṁ muninaṁ carantaṁ, Addakkhi so santipadaṁ mahesi.
Having cut down what’s grown, they wouldn’t replant, Yo jātamucchijja na ropayeyya, nor would they nurture what’s growing. Jāyantamassa nānuppavecche; That’s who they call a sage wandering alone, Tamāhu ekaṁ muninaṁ carantaṁ, the great seer has seen the state of peace. Addakkhi so santipadaṁ mahesi.
Having appraised the fields and measured the seeds, *Taking pamāya as an absolutive of pamiṇāti per Snp 4.12:17.1, against the commentary’s sense of “crushed” (Sanskrit: pramṛṇati).they wouldn’t nurture them with moisture. Truly that sage who sees the ending of rebirth has left speculation behind and is beyond reckoning. *Compare the stock idiom Saṅkhampi na upeti at eg. SN 20.2:1.7; also Snp 5.7:6.3.

Steadfast, straight as a shuttle, Yo ve ṭhitatto tasaraṁva ujju, horrified by wicked deeds, Jigucchati kammehi pāpakehi; discerning the just and the unjust: Vīmaṁsamāno visamaṁ samañca, that’s who the attentive know as a sage. Taṁ vāpi dhīrā muni vedayanti.
Restrained, they do no evil, young or middle-aged, the sage is self-controlled. Irreproachable, he does not insult anyone: that’s who the attentive know as a sage.

Yadaggato majjhato sesato vā, Piṇḍaṁ labhetha paradattūpajīvī; Nālaṁ thutuṁ nopi nipaccavādī, Taṁ vāpi dhīrā muni vedayanti.

The sage lives refraining from sex, Muniṁ carantaṁ virataṁ methunasmā, even when young is not tied down, Yo yobbane nopanibajjhate kvaci; refraining from indulgence and negligence, freed: Madappamādā virataṁ vippamuttaṁ, that’s who the attentive know as a sage. Taṁ vāpi dhīrā muni vedayanti.
Understanding the world, the seer of the ultimate goal, the unaffected one, having crossed the flood and the ocean, has cut the ties, unattached and undefiled: that’s who the attentive know as a sage.
