The conceit that comes from clinging to practices or views—even if they’re supreme—is a fetter preventing full freedom.

If, maintaining that theirs is the “ultimate” view,a personage makes it out to be highest in the world;*Reading yad- here and below as yadi.then they declare all others are “lesser”;that’s why they’re not beyond disputes.

Paramanti diṭṭhīsu paribbasāno, Yaduttari kurute jantu loke; Hīnāti aññe tato sabbamāha, Tasmā vivādāni avītivatto.

If, maintaining that theirs is the “ultimate” view,
Paramanti diṭṭhīsu paribbasāno,

Those who are skilled say that, too, is a knot,
Taṁ vāpi ganthaṁ kusalā vadanti,
relying on which people see others as lesser.
