Adorned with jewelry and all dressed up,with her garland and her makeup on,and her feet so brightly rouged:the courtesan was wearing slippers.

“Alaṅkatā suvasanā, māladhārī vibhūsitā; *māladhārī → mālābhārī (bj); mālabhārī (sya1ed, sya2ed)Alattakakatāpādā, pādukāruyha vesikā.

Adorned with jewelry and all dressed up,

with her garland and her makeup on,

Alattakakatāpādā,
the courtesan was wearing slippers.

Taking off her slippers in front of me,her palms joined in greeting,smiling, she spoke to meso softly and so sweet:

Pādukā oruhitvāna, purato pañjalīkatā; Sā maṁ saṇhena mudunā, mhitapubbaṁ abhāsatha. *mhitapubbaṁ → mihitapubbaṁ (bj); mitapubbam (sya1ed, sya2ed)

“You’re too young to go forth—come, stay in my teaching!Enjoy human sensual pleasures,I’ll give you riches.I promise this is the truth—I swear it by the Sacred Flame.

Yuvāsi tvaṁ pabbajito, tiṭṭhāhi mama sāsane; Bhuñja mānusake kāme, ahaṁ vittaṁ dadāmi te; Saccaṁ te paṭijānāmi, aggiṁ vā te harāmahaṁ.

“You’re too young to go forth—
Yuvāsi tvaṁ pabbajito,
come, stay in my teaching!
tiṭṭhāhi mama sāsane;
Enjoy human sensual pleasures,
Bhuñja mānusake kāme,
I’ll give you riches.
ahaṁ vittaṁ dadāmi te;
I promise this is the truth—
Saccaṁ te paṭijānāmi,
I swear it by the Sacred Flame.

both of us leaning on staffs,

we shall both go forth,

Tañca disvāna yācantiṁ, vesikaṁ pañjalīkataṁ; Alaṅkataṁ suvasanaṁ, maccupāsaṁva oḍḍitaṁ.

I saw the courtesan seducing me,

her palms joined in greeting,
vesikaṁ pañjalīkataṁ;
adorned with jewelry and all dressed up,
Alaṅkataṁ suvasanaṁ,
set up like a snare of death.
