“I used to be a water-carrier. Even when it was cold, I would always plunge into the water, *Norman and Ṭhānissaro, evidently under the influence of the commentary, translate in present tense, but udakamotariṁ is an aorist in past tense, as is rendered by Mahendra. If the commentary is correct, she is telling a story from before she ordained. But both the brahmin’s respectful form of addresses (bhoti) and the boldness of her teachings suggest she was already a nun.afraid of my masters’ beatings, *Ayyānaṁ is ambiguous; it could be either male or female.harassed by fear of abuse and anger.

Brahmin, what are you afraid of,
Kassa brāhmaṇa tvaṁ bhīto,
that you always plunge into the water,
sadā udakamotari;

Would not they all go to heaven, then: all the frogs and the turtles, dragons, dolphins, *Here, nāga cannot be cobra or elephant, so it must be the supernatural creature, which is said to live in underwater lairs. | Susumāra (literally “child-killer”) may be either the Gangetic dolphin (MN 129:21.3) or the crocodile (Cp 27:1.3). The dolphin is more obviously a “water-dweller”.and other water-dwellers too?

If these rivers had carried away
Sace imā nadiyo te,
your bad deeds in the past,
pāpaṁ pubbe kataṁ vahuṁ;
they would also carry away your good deeds,
Puññampimā vaheyyuṁ te,
from which you’d be prevented.
tena tvaṁ paribāhiro.

“Kummaggapaṭipannaṁ maṁ, ariyamaggaṁ samānayi; Dakābhisecanā bhoti, imaṁ sāṭaṁ dadāmi te”.

“I have been on the wrong path,
“Kummaggapaṭipannaṁ maṁ,
and you’ve guided me to the noble path.
ariyamaggaṁ samānayi;
Madam, I give to you
Dakābhisecanā bhoti,
this ablution cloth.”
imaṁ sāṭaṁ dadāmi te”.

If you fear suffering,
Sace bhāyasi dukkhassa,
