Vimalā, the Former Courtesan

Intoxicated by my appearance,my figure, my beauty, my fame,and owing to my youth,I looked down on others.

“Mattā vaṇṇena rūpena, sobhaggena yasena ca; Yobbanena cupatthaddhā, aññāsamatimaññihaṁ.

Intoxicated by my appearance,“Mattā vaṇṇena rūpena, my figure, my beauty, my fame,sobhaggena yasena ca; and owing to my youth,Yobbanena cupatthaddhā, I looked down on others.aññāsamatimaññihaṁ.

I adorned this bodyall pretty, lamented by fools,and stood at the brothel door,like a hunter setting a snare.

Vibhūsetvā imaṁ kāyaṁ, sucittaṁ bālalāpanaṁ; Aṭṭhāsiṁ vesidvāramhi, luddo pāsamivoḍḍiya.

I adorned this bodyVibhūsetvā imaṁ kāyaṁ, all pretty, lamented by fools,sucittaṁ bālalāpanaṁ; and stood at the brothel door,Aṭṭhāsiṁ vesidvāramhi, like a hunter setting a snare.luddo pāsamivoḍḍiya.

I stripped for them,revealing my many hidden treasures.Creating an intricate illusion,I laughed, teasing those men.

Piḷandhanaṁ vidaṁsentī, guyhaṁ pakāsikaṁ bahuṁ; Akāsiṁ vividhaṁ māyaṁ, ujjagghantī bahuṁ janaṁ.

I stripped for them,Piḷandhanaṁ vidaṁsentī, revealing my many hidden treasures.guyhaṁ pakāsikaṁ bahuṁ; Creating an intricate illusion,Akāsiṁ vividhaṁ māyaṁ, I laughed, teasing those men.ujjagghantī bahuṁ janaṁ.

Today, having wandered for alms,my head shaven, wearing the outer robe,I sat at the root of a tree to meditate;I’ve gained freedom from thought.

Sājja piṇḍaṁ caritvāna, muṇḍā saṅghāṭipārutā; Nisinnā rukkhamūlamhi, avitakkassa lābhinī.

All yokes are severed,both human and heavenly.Having wiped out all defilements,I have become cooled and quenched.

Sabbe yogā samucchinnā, ye dibbā ye ca mānusā; Khepetvā āsave sabbe, sītibhūtāmhi nibbutā”ti.
