Ānanda asks the Buddha about the rebirths of several disciples. The Buddha confirms those details, and proposes a way for people to know for themselves by reflecting on the four factors of stream-entry.

More than five hundred laymen in Ñātika have passed away having ended three fetters. They’re stream-enterers, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, assured, destined for awakening.*The commentary attributes the large number of deaths to a recent plague (ahivātaroga, “viper’s breath disease”). This deadly contagion (malaria?) was known to kill off entire families (Kd 1:50.1.1). According to the commentaries, the same disease once afflicted Vesālī, prompting the teaching of the Ratanasutta (Snp 2.1, Kp 6).

It’s no wonder that a human being should pass away. But if you should come and ask me about it each and every time someone passes away, that would be a bother for me.So Ānanda, I will teach you the explanation of the DhammaDhamma1. (Sánscrito: dharma)Ver en el glosario named ‘the mirror of the teaching’. A noble disciple who has this may declare of themselves:‘I’ve finished with rebirth in hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. I’ve finished with all places of loss, bad places, the underworld. I am a stream-enterer! I’m not liable to be reborn in the underworld, and am assured, destined for awakening.’

Ver en el glosario …And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to immersion. This is that mirror of the teaching.A noble disciple who has this may declare of themselves:‘I’ve finished with rebirth in hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm.
