“Mendicants, these four individuals are found in the world. What four? The greedy, the hateful, the delusional, and the conceited.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro? Sarāgo, sadoso, samoho, samāno—

The greedy, the hateful, the delusional, and the conceited.

Full of desire for desirable things, enjoying things that seem pleasant, beings veiled by delusion only tighten their bonds.

Full of desire for desirable things,

Rāgajaṁ dosajañcāpi, mohajaṁ cāpaviddasū; Karontākusalaṁ kammaṁ,*kammaṁ → dhammaṁ (mr)savighātaṁ dukhudrayaṁ.

Born of greed, born of hate,
Rāgajaṁ dosajañcāpi,
born of delusion: the ignorant
mohajaṁ cāpaviddasū;
do unskillful deeds
Karontākusalaṁ kammaṁ,*kammaṁ → dhammaṁ (mr)
that afflict and produce pain.

If you act out of these qualities, that’s what you become. But men shrouded by ignorance, are blind, with no eyes to see, and they never imagine that this could be so.”

Avijjānivutā posā, andhabhūtā acakkhukā; Yathā dhammā tathā santā, na tassevanti maññare”ti.*tassevanti → nassevanti (bj)

If you act out of these qualities, that’s what you become.
Avijjānivutā posā,
But men shrouded by ignorance,
andhabhūtā acakkhukā;
are blind, with no eyes to see,
Yathā dhammā tathā santā,
and they never imagine that this could be so.”
