You don’t get good things by praying for them, but by how you live.

“Pañcime, gahapati, dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ. Katame pañca? Āyu, gahapati, iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ; vaṇṇo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ; sukhaṁ iṭṭhaṁ kantaṁ manāpaṁ dullabhaṁ lokasmiṁ; yaso iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ; saggā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ. Ime kho, gahapati, pañca dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ.

What five?
Katame pañca?
Long life,
Āyu, gahapati, iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ;
beauty,

happiness,
sukhaṁ iṭṭhaṁ kantaṁ manāpaṁ dullabhaṁ lokasmiṁ;
fame,
yaso iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ;
and heaven.

These are the five things, which are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.

So lābhī hoti āyussa dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

For one who desires lofty delightsagain and again—long life, beauty, fame and reputation,heaven, and an eminent family—

Āyuṁ vaṇṇaṁ yasaṁ kittiṁ, Saggaṁ uccākulīnataṁ; Ratiyo patthayānena, *patthayānena → patthayamānena (mr)Uḷārā aparāparā.

For one who desires lofty delights
Āyuṁ vaṇṇaṁ yasaṁ kittiṁ,
again and again—
Saggaṁ uccākulīnataṁ;
long life, beauty, fame and reputation,
Ratiyo patthayānena, *patthayānena → patthayamānena (mr)
heaven, and an eminent family—
Uḷārā aparāparā.

For one who desires lofty delightsĀyuṁ vaṇṇaṁ yasaṁ kittiṁ, again and again—Saggaṁ uccākulīnataṁ; long life, beauty, fame and reputation,Ratiyo patthayānena, *patthayānena → patthayamānena (mr)heaven, and an eminent family—Uḷārā aparāparā.

the astute praise diligencein making merit.Being diligent, an astute personsecures both benefits:

Appamādaṁ pasaṁsanti, puññakiriyāsu paṇḍitā; Appamatto ubho atthe, adhigaṇhāti paṇḍito.

Being diligent, an astute person
Appamatto ubho atthe,
secures both benefits:
adhigaṇhāti paṇḍito.

Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho, *Diṭṭhe dhamme ca → diṭṭheva dhamme (bj)yo cattho samparāyiko; Atthābhisamayā dhīro, paṇḍitoti pavuccatī”ti.

the benefit in this life,
Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho, *Diṭṭhe dhamme ca → diṭṭheva dhamme (bj)
and in lives to come.
yo cattho samparāyiko;
An attentive one, comprehending the meaning,
Atthābhisamayā dhīro,
is called ‘astute’.”
