The Fish King’s Conduct

“Then again when I wasa fish king in a great lake,in the heat of the sunthe water in the lake evaporated.

“Punāparaṁ yadā homi, maccharājā mahāsare; Uṇhe sūriyasantāpe, sare udaka khīyatha.

“Then again when I was“Punāparaṁ yadā homi, a fish king in a great lake,maccharājā mahāsare; in the heat of the sunUṇhe sūriyasantāpe, the water in the lake evaporated.sare udaka khīyatha.

Then crows and vultures,herons, hawks, and falcons,perched near the fishand devoured them day and night.

Tato kākā ca gijjhā ca, kaṅkā kulalasenakā; *kaṅkā → bakā (bj, pts-vp-pli1-2)Bhakkhayanti divārattiṁ, macche upanisīdiya.

Then crows and vultures,Tato kākā ca gijjhā ca, herons, hawks, and falcons,kaṅkā kulalasenakā; *kaṅkā → bakā (bj, pts-vp-pli1-2)perched near the fishBhakkhayanti divārattiṁ, and devoured them day and night.macche upanisīdiya.

There I had the following thought,being harassed with my relatives:‘By what meanscan I free my relatives from this suffering?’

Evaṁ cintesahaṁ tattha, saha ñātīhi pīḷito; ‘Kena nu kho upāyena, ñātī dukkhā pamocaye’.

There I had the following thought,Evaṁ cintesahaṁ tattha, being harassed with my relatives:saha ñātīhi pīḷito; ‘By what means‘Kena nu kho upāyena, can I free my relatives from this suffering?’ñātī dukkhā pamocaye’.

Vicintayitvā dhammatthaṁ, saccaṁ addasa passayaṁ; Sacce ṭhatvā pamocesiṁ, ñātīnaṁ taṁ atikkhayaṁ.

Considering the value of the Dhamma,Vicintayitvā dhammatthaṁ, I saw the truth as a support.saccaṁ addasa passayaṁ; Standing in the truth,Sacce ṭhatvā pamocesiṁ, I freed my relatives from that holocaust.ñātīnaṁ taṁ atikkhayaṁ.

Recollecting the true Dhamma,considered the ultimate goal,I made a declaration of truththat would last eternally in the world.

Anussaritvā sataṁ dhammaṁ, paramatthaṁ vicintayaṁ; Akāsiṁ saccakiriyaṁ, yaṁ loke dhuvasassataṁ.

Recollecting the true Dhamma,Anussaritvā sataṁ dhammaṁ, considered the ultimate goal,paramatthaṁ vicintayaṁ; I made a declaration of truthAkāsiṁ saccakiriyaṁ, that would last eternally in the world.yaṁ loke dhuvasassataṁ.

‘So long as I can recall myself,since I became aware,I do not recall deliberatelyharming even a single living creature.

‘Yato sarāmi attānaṁ, yato pattosmi viññutaṁ; Nābhijānāmi sañcicca, ekapāṇampi hiṁsitaṁ.

‘So long as I can recall myself,‘Yato sarāmi attānaṁ, since I became aware,yato pattosmi viññutaṁ; I do not recall deliberatelyNābhijānāmi sañcicca, harming even a single living creature.ekapāṇampi hiṁsitaṁ.

By this declaration of truth,may Pajjuna rain down!Thunder forth, Pajjuna!*This verse also in Ja 75.Disperse the trove of the crow!Subject the crow to sorrow,*It seems a little immoderate.and free the fish from sorrow!’

Etena saccavajjena, pajjunno abhivassatu; Abhitthanaya pajjunna, nidhiṁ kākassa nāsaya; Kākaṁ sokāya randhehi, macche sokā pamocaya’.

By this declaration of truth,Etena saccavajjena, may Pajjuna rain down!pajjunno abhivassatu; Thunder forth, Pajjuna!*This verse also in Ja 75.Abhitthanaya pajjunna, Disperse the trove of the crow!nidhiṁ kākassa nāsaya; Subject the crow to sorrow,*It seems a little immoderate.Kākaṁ sokāya randhehi, and free the fish from sorrow!’macche sokā pamocaya’.

As this excellent truth was declared,Pajjuna thundered forth.In an instant the rain poured down,soaking the uplands and valleys.

Saha kate saccavare, pajjunno abhigajjiya; Thalaṁ ninnañca pūrento, khaṇena abhivassatha.

As this excellent truth was declared,Saha kate saccavare, Pajjuna thundered forth.pajjunno abhigajjiya; In an instant the rain poured down,Thalaṁ ninnañca pūrento, soaking the uplands and valleys.khaṇena abhivassatha.

Having made such supreme effortfor this excellent truth,I made the great cloud pour down,relying on the force of the power of truth.There is no-one to equal my truthfulness:this is my perfection of truth.”

Evarūpaṁ saccavaraṁ, katvā vīriyamuttamaṁ; Vassāpesiṁ mahāmeghaṁ, saccatejabalassito; Saccena me samo natthi, esā me saccapāramī”ti.
