“Mendicants, these four footprints of the gods are in order to purify unpurified beings and cleanse unclean beings.*Compare the “footprints of the Dhamma” (AN 4.29:1.1) or the “footprints of the Realized One” (MN 27:19.3). | Devapada appears at Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa 11.5.6.9 in the sense “holy word”.

“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, devānaṁ devapadāni avisuddhānaṁ sattānaṁ visuddhiyā apariyodātānaṁ sattānaṁ pariyodapanāya.
