In the twenty-five yearssince I went forth,I don’t know that I had ever foundserenity in my mind.

“Paṇṇavīsativassāni, yato pabbajitāya me; Nābhijānāmi cittassa, samaṁ laddhaṁ kudācanaṁ.

“Paṇṇavīsativassāni,

since I went forth,

yato pabbajitāya me;

I don’t know that I had ever found

Nābhijānāmi cittassa,

serenity in my mind.

I had failed to find peace of heart,or any control over my mind.When I remembered the victor’s instructions,I was struck with a sense of urgency.

Aladdhā cetaso santiṁ, citte avasavattinī; Tato saṁvegamāpādiṁ, saritvā jinasāsanaṁ.

I had failed to find peace of heart,

Aladdhā cetaso santiṁ,

or any control over my mind.

When I remembered the victor’s instructions,

Tato saṁvegamāpādiṁ,

Bahūhi dukkhadhammehi, appamādaratāya me; Taṇhakkhayo anuppatto, kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ; Ajja me sattamī ratti, yato taṇhā visositā”ti.

Though subject to so many painful things,

Bahūhi dukkhadhammehi,

I have, through my love of diligence,

appamādaratāya me;

reached the ending of craving,

Taṇhakkhayo anuppatto,

and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.

kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ;

This is the seventh day

Ajja me sattamī ratti,

since my craving dried up.

yato taṇhā visositā”ti.

Though subject to so many painful things,Bahūhi dukkhadhammehi, I have, through my love of diligence,appamādaratāya me; reached the ending of craving,Taṇhakkhayo anuppatto, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ; This is the seventh dayAjja me sattamī ratti, since my craving dried up.yato taṇhā visositā”ti.
