Vaḍḍha’s Mother

“Vaḍḍha, please never everget snarled in the world.My child, do not partakein suffering again and again.

“Mā su te vaḍḍha lokamhi, vanatho āhu kudācanaṁ; Mā puttaka punappunaṁ, ahu dukkhassa bhāgimā.

“Vaḍḍha, please never ever“Mā su te vaḍḍha lokamhi, get snarled in the world.vanatho āhu kudācanaṁ; My child, do not partakeMā puttaka punappunaṁ, in suffering again and again.ahu dukkhassa bhāgimā.

For happy dwell the sages, Vaḍḍha,unstirred, their doubts cut off,cooled and tamed,and free of defilements.

Sukhañhi vaḍḍha munayo, anejā chinnasaṁsayā; Sītibhūtā damappattā, viharanti anāsavā.

For happy dwell the sages, Vaḍḍha,Sukhañhi vaḍḍha munayo, unstirred, their doubts cut off,anejā chinnasaṁsayā; cooled and tamed,Sītibhūtā damappattā, and free of defilements.viharanti anāsavā.

Vaḍḍha, foster the paththat the seers have walked,for the attainment of vision,and for making an end of suffering.”

Tehānuciṇṇaṁ isībhi, maggaṁ dassanapattiyā; Dukkhassantakiriyāya, tvaṁ vaḍḍha anubrūhaya”.

Vaḍḍha, foster the pathTehānuciṇṇaṁ isībhi, that the seers have walked,maggaṁ dassanapattiyā; for the attainment of vision,Dukkhassantakiriyāya, and for making an end of suffering.”tvaṁ vaḍḍha anubrūhaya”.

“Mother, you speak with such assuranceto me on this matter.My dear mom, I can’t help thinkingthat no snarls are found in you.”

“Visāradāva bhaṇasi, etamatthaṁ janetti me; Maññāmi nūna māmike, vanatho te na vijjati”.

“Mother, you speak with such assurance“Visāradāva bhaṇasi, to me on this matter.etamatthaṁ janetti me; My dear mom, I can’t help thinkingMaññāmi nūna māmike, that no snarls are found in you.”vanatho te na vijjati”.

“Vaḍḍha, not a jot or a skerrickof entanglement is found in mefor any conditions at all,whether low, high, or middling.

“Ye keci vaḍḍha saṅkhārā, hīnā ukkaṭṭhamajjhimā; Aṇūpi aṇumattopi, vanatho me na vijjati.

“Vaḍḍha, not a jot or a skerrick“Ye keci vaḍḍha saṅkhārā, of entanglement is found in mehīnā ukkaṭṭhamajjhimā; for any conditions at all,Aṇūpi aṇumattopi, whether low, high, or middling.vanatho me na vijjati.

All defilements are ended for me,meditating and diligent.I’ve attained the three knowledgesand fulfilled the BuddhaBuddhaEl nombre dado a quien redescubre por sí mismo el sendero liberador del Dhamma, tras un largo período de haber sido olvidado por el mundo. All defilements are ended for me,Sabbe me āsavā khīṇā, meditating and diligent.appamattassa jhāyato; I’ve attained the three knowledgesTisso vijjā anuppattā, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.”kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ”.

“Oh so excellent was the goadmy mother spurred me with!Owing to her compassion, she spokeverses on the ultimate goal.

“Uḷāraṁ vata me mātā, patodaṁ samavassari; Paramatthasañhitā gāthā, yathāpi anukampikā.

“Oh so excellent was the goad“Uḷāraṁ vata me mātā, my mother spurred me with!patodaṁ samavassari; Owing to her compassion, she spokeParamatthasañhitā gāthā, verses on the ultimate goal.yathāpi anukampikā.

On hearing her words,advised by my mother,I was struck with righteous urgencyfor the sake of sanctuary from the yoke.

Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā, anusiṭṭhiṁ janettiyā; Dhammasaṁvegamāpādiṁ, yogakkhemassa pattiyā.

On hearing her words,Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā, advised by my mother,anusiṭṭhiṁ janettiyā; I was struck with righteous urgencyDhammasaṁvegamāpādiṁ, for the sake of sanctuary from the yoke.yogakkhemassa pattiyā.

Striving, resolute,tireless all day and night,urged on by my mother,I realized supreme peace.*These verses continue in Thag 5.5, so I leave off the close quote.

Sohaṁ padhānapahitatto, rattindivamatandito; Mātarā codito santo, aphusiṁ santimuttamaṁ”.
