Gayākassapa

Three times a day—morning, midday, and evening—I plunged into the water at Gayāfor the Gayā spring festival.

“Pāto majjhanhikaṁ sāyaṁ, *majjhanhikaṁ → majjhantikaṁ (bj, sya1ed, sya2ed, pts1ed); majjhaṇhikaṁ (pts2ed)tikkhattuṁ divasassahaṁ; Otariṁ udakaṁ sohaṁ, gayāya gayaphagguyā.

“Any bad things I’ve donein previous lives,I’ll now rinse away right here”—such was the view I used to hold.

‘Yaṁ mayā pakataṁ pāpaṁ, pubbe aññāsu jātisu; Taṁ dānīdha pavāhemi’, evaṁdiṭṭhi pure ahuṁ.

“Any bad things I’ve done‘Yaṁ mayā pakataṁ pāpaṁ, in previous lives,pubbe aññāsu jātisu; I’ll now rinse away right here”—Taṁ dānīdha pavāhemi’, such was the view I used to hold.evaṁdiṭṭhi pure ahuṁ.

Having heard the fine words,a passage meaningful and principled,I rationally reflectedon the true, essential goal.

Sutvā subhāsitaṁ vācaṁ, dhammatthasahitaṁ padaṁ; Tathaṁ yāthāvakaṁ atthaṁ, yoniso paccavekkhisaṁ.

I’ve washed away all bad things;I’m stainless, clean, pristine;the pure heir of the pure one,a true-born son of the BuddhaBuddhaEl nombre dado a quien redescubre por sí mismo el sendero liberador del Dhamma, tras un largo período de haber sido olvidado por el mundo. When I plunged into the eightfold stream,all bad things were rinsed away.I’ve attained the three knowledgesand fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.

Ogayhaṭṭhaṅgikaṁ sotaṁ, sabbapāpaṁ pavāhayiṁ; Tisso vijjā ajjhagamiṁ, kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.

When I plunged into the eightfold stream,Ogayhaṭṭhaṅgikaṁ sotaṁ, all bad things were rinsed away.sabbapāpaṁ pavāhayiṁ; I’ve attained the three knowledgesTisso vijjā ajjhagamiṁ, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
